The Crab and the Fox 螃蟹和狐貍

A crab1 once left the sea-shore and went and settled in a meadow2 some way inland, which looked very nice and green and seemed likely to be a good place to feed in. But a hungry fox came along and spied the crab and caught him. Just as he was going to be eaten up, the crab said, "This is just what I deserve, for I had no business to leave my natural home by the sea and settle here as though I belonged to the land."

Be content with your lot.

有一次，一只螃蟹離開(kāi)海邊，定居在內(nèi)陸的一塊草地上，那里看著很美，有青青的綠草，是個(gè)養(yǎng)分充足的好地方。然而，一只饑餓的狐貍走過(guò)來(lái)，看見(jiàn)螃蟹并捉住了他。就在狐貍將要吃掉他之前，螃蟹說(shuō)：“我真是活該，我沒(méi)有理由要離開(kāi)海邊那個(gè)天然的家，像陸地棲息的動(dòng)物一樣，偏要到這里來(lái)定居。”

The Ant 螞蟻

Ants were once men and made their living by tilling the soil. But, not content with the results of their own work, they were always eating longing1 eyes upon the crops and fruits of their neighbours, which they stole, whenever they got the chance, and added to their own store. At last their covetousness2 made Jupiter so angry that he changed them into ants. But, though their forms were changed, their nature remained the same: and so, to this day, they go about among the cornfields and gather the fruits of others' labour, and store them up for their own use.

You may punish a thief, but his bent3 remains4.

Apelles and the young ass 阿佩萊斯和小毛驢

Apelles meeting with the little ass1 invited him to tea that very right. The little ass was trembling with delight. He prances2 through the wood; he pesters3 all who pass: 'Apelles bores me so. He will not let me be, you know! Whenever him I see, he asks me in to tea. I'm sure he wants to paint a Pegasus from me.'

'Oh no!' Apelles said as he happened to be near, 'I am painting the judgment4 of King Midas. I'm acquainting with you because you seem to boast the proper length of ear. So if you'll come to tea, most happy I shall be. For long-eared asses5 are not rare, but with the ears that you can show, no little or big ass either ever could compare!'

Consumed with vanity, the fool admires himself for that which others ridicule6, and often makes a boast of that which ought to shame him most.

阿佩萊斯遇到一只小小的毛驢，當(dāng)晚就請(qǐng)它去喝茶。這小驢子高興得全身顫抖，它在森林里高視闊步，和所有路過(guò)的人嘮嘮叨叨地說(shuō)：“阿佩萊斯煩死我了，你知道，他死纏著我不放，不論什么時(shí)候遇到她，他總是叫我去喝茶，我想他一定是要按我的模樣畫(huà)一匹天上的飛馬呢。”

“不，哪有那么回事!”阿佩萊斯說(shuō)道(他正好在旁邊)，“我畫(huà)的是國(guó)王米達(dá)斯的審判，我認(rèn)識(shí)你，是因?yàn)槟闼坪踉诖祰u你的耳朵長(zhǎng)度合適。所以如果你來(lái)喝茶，我高興之至。長(zhǎng)耳朵的驢子并不稀奇，可是你生的那副耳朵，無(wú)論大小驢子都不能和你相比!”

蠢才妄自尊大。他自鳴得意，恰恰是受人嘲笑奚落的短處，而且常常把應(yīng)該引以為奇恥大辱的事情大吹大擂。

The hound and the fox 獵狗和狐貍

A hound, roaming in the forest, spied a lion. He thought the lion might be a good prey1 and chased, thinking he would make a fine quarry2. Presently the lion perceived that he was being pursued, so, stopping short, he rounded on his pursuer and gave a loud roar. The hound immediately turned tail and fled. A fox, seeing him running away, jeered3 at him and said, "Ho! Ho! There goes the coward who chased a lion and ran away the moment the roared!"

有一條獵狗，正在森林里閑逛，猛然看見(jiàn)了一只獅子，心想這可是一個(gè)不錯(cuò)的獵物，便追了上去，想施展一下自己的小伎倆。很快，獅子覺(jué)察到自己被追蹤了，便突然停住，回過(guò)頭來(lái)沖著追捕者大聲吼叫。獵狗立刻轉(zhuǎn)身逃跑了。一只狐貍見(jiàn)狀，便嘲笑起獵狗：“呵呵，真是個(gè)膽小鬼，竟然還敢追獅子，只要獅子一聲吼，你可就落荒而逃了!”

The grasshopper and the ants 螞蚱和螞蟻

One fine day in winter some ants were busy drying their store of corn, which had got rather damp during a long spell of rain. Presently1 up came a grasshopper2 and begged them to spare her a few grains, "For," she said, "I'm simply starving." The ants stopped work for a moment, though this was against their principles. "May we ask," said they, "what you were doing with yourself all last summer? Why didn't you collect a store of food for the winter?" "The fact is," replied the grasshopper, "I was so busy singing that I hadn't the time." "If you spent the summer singing," replied the ants, "you can't do better than spend the winter dancing." And they chuckled3 and went on with their work.

冬天一個(gè)溫暖如春的日子里，螞蟻們正忙著曬干自己存儲(chǔ)的糧食。由于下來(lái)很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間的雨，糧食已經(jīng)非常潮濕了。這時(shí)，來(lái)了一只螞蚱，向他們乞討一點(diǎn)糧食。“因?yàn)椋蔽涷普f(shuō)，“我實(shí)在是餓壞了。”盡管有點(diǎn)違背原則，但螞蟻們還是停下了手頭的工作。“我們能問(wèn)一下嗎?”他們說(shuō)，“整個(gè)夏天你都在做些什么呢?為什么不為冬天儲(chǔ)存一些糧食呢?”“實(shí)際上，”螞蚱回答道，“我一直在忙著唱歌，根本沒(méi)有時(shí)間存儲(chǔ)糧食。”“如果你整個(gè)夏天都在唱歌，”螞蟻們回答道，“那么，你最好在冬天就忙著跳舞吧。”他們哈哈大笑起來(lái)，繼續(xù)忙于各自的工作。
